I love to read! Growing up you could always catch me in my free time curled up with a good book. And honestly that hasn’t changed!
I still love to read when I get the chance. I just feel smarter when I read. And like I’m investing in myself. It’s more relaxing and pleasurable to me than almost any other way to unwind.
I also read to challenge my faith. I’m so grateful for the voices of so many female authors and how they draw out new truths from Scriptures principles. If they are funny and entertaining–all the better!
Here are 15 must-read books for Christian women. Pick up these books and laugh, be encouraged, be convicted and strengthened in your faith!
7 Must-Read Books for Christian Women
Desperate: Hope for the Mom Who Needs to Breathe– Probably my favorite “mom” book that I’ve read. It’s practical encouragement for moms who are feeling overwhelmed or lost in the day to day of being a parent. It’s written as a back and forth between a young mom and an older mentor. Definitely one I’ve read and reread!
“Remember that the consequences of mothering well are truly great. You have this opportunity to ingrain love, righteousness, and faith into the very depths of your children’s souls.”
Made to Crave: Satisfying Your Deepest Desire with God Not Food – This recent read explores emotional eating and how to honor God with our bodies. Very eye-opening and one I’m sure I will be coming back to again.
“I am made for more than a vicious cycle of eating, gaining, stressing,–eating, gaining, stressing…I am made to rise up, do battle with my issues, and, using the Lord’s strength in me defeat them-spiritually, physically, and mentally–to the glory of God.”
Crash the Chatterbox: Hearing God’s Voice Above All Others – I started reading this book before Barrett was born (April) and just finally wrapped it up in July. That’s not a testament to how good and interesting of a read it was, just how hectic life can get with a newborn. The concept of this book is listening to the Holy Spirit and shutting down the lies Satan, the world and we tell ourselves. SO GOOD.
“Who told you the skills and gifts I’ve given you aren’t much good and won’t make much of an impact?”
One Thousand Gifts: A Dare to Live Fully Right Where You Are – I read this book a couple years ago and I love the concept of connecting thankfulness to our day to day lives and by doing so we become more aware of God’s grace. A great habit to get into and the author Ann Voskamp has a very descriptive writing style (which is a bit polarizing, but her message is good!).
“We only enter into the full life if our faith gives thanks. Because how else do we accept His free gift of salvation if not with thanksgiving? Thanksgiving is the evidence of our acceptance of whatever He gives. Thanksgiving is the manifestation of our Yes! to His grace.”
The Message – I count this as Christian inspiration but it really is a Biblical paraphrase. I love to read it alongside my Bible because it helps me hear the verses in a new way. Sometimes over-familiarity leads me to skim passages without really examining what they mean for me -this book helps with that! You can also use the Bible app with The Message translation.
“But what happens when we live God’s way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.” Galations 5:22-23
Looking for Lovely: Collecting the Moments That Matter – This is on my “want to read” list after hearing Annie Downs speak at our Women’s Day conference at GLM. She was so entertaining and real and great at explaining the Bible in a fresh way! Can’t wait to read this book!
“I want you to take every step of your life with excitement for where you are headed. And I want you to feel beautiful and confident as you do.”
For the Love: Fighting for Grace in a World of Impossible Standards – Jen Hatmaker is SO funny and a straight shooter (love those people!) so I’ve wanted to read this book for awhile and it’s been recommended to me by a couple friends. It’s on it’s way as we speak from the Amazon fairies.
“We are going to let ourselves and each other off the hook, and in the end we will be free to run our races well; to live wide, generous days; and to practice the wholehearted living we were created for.”

Of course there is no substitute for reading God’s Word, but I love these types of books that encourage me in my faith and roles as a woman of God, mother, and wife.
So much better to read this type of writing than to pin a hundred toddler birthday parties I’m never going to recreate or watch an overgrown man-child fall helplessly, dramatically “in love” with 20 girls at once that look ridiculously alike (*ahem* The Bachelor*cough*cough*)
I’m not going to lie, some of the truths unpacked in these books sting a little. You will be convicted. But you will also be (hopefully) be freed from old thinking patterns and sins that prevent you from living the life God has for you and keep you from a rich, close relationship with Him.
