Chatting Over Coffee

Hi friends! Settle in for a cup of coffee and a good old fashioned chat with me, okay?

Ah….I love the peace of a quiet cup of coffee in the morning. Let’s pretend we are chatting over coffee….

So what’s been going on with us….well, since I am mostly finished up at work we’ve fallen into a great routine around the house where we might run out in the mornings or play at or near home, then lunch, naptime for Layla, blog work for me, and then snacks and low key play till dinner. I’m a big fan of routine and Layla is too. We try to get out of the house at least once a day, even if it’s just here in the neighborhood.

Layla is growing so quickly…..everyone said it would go fast and it sure has! She’s such a little sweetie when she’s not being silly. These last few weeks she has started picking up her toys, doing better at following simple directions, and loves to practice animal sounds. Her *roars* and *meows* are the cutest.

September is such a busy month for us too! I’m excited, but already a little stressed about all the fun (type A people problems!). It’s going to be amazing– a weekend getaway for Nate and I, my cousin getting married, starting MOPS and a new Bible study, girls weekend in Columbus for the Country Living Fair–but it’s a lot going on at once for my very routine-driven personality.

Country Living Fair Girls Weekend

Overall I’m so excited for fall! I got a Pumpkin Spice Latte the other day….it may have been 85 degrees but I wanted it and I wanted it hot! I’m definitely ready for cooler weather and all the fall activities and traditions we have. We had a total fall teaser last week with highs only reaching 70 or the upper 60s and it was glorious. I love summer, but fall is my favorite by far.

And Michigan does fall RIGHT. Plus, it’s football season again! Yes! (Did you check out these amazing sweet potato fries to make for the game?) We are mulling over taking Layla to her first football game sometime this fall. It’s sometimes hard to know if it would be worth it, (we’re talking high school football, NOT like tickets to see the Colts) for the probably 30-45 minutes she could last at a game. But maybe. It could be fun!

Well I must finish off this cup of coffee and scoot! Hopefully you are having a great loong weekend relaxing and hanging out with family and friends!

P.S. I wanted to keep this light, but I’ve been very affected by the refugee situation in the Middle East and Europe. So if we were really having coffee this is what I would want to talk with you about….how saddened I am… how undeservingly priviledged I am that I don’t have to choose a terrifying journey with my child over living in a  brutal extremist regime…how helpless I feel to help.

Please take a moment to read about the crisis or better yet see the crisis (even though there is a part of me that wants to look away and pretend it doesn’t exist), and then about tangible ways we can help. We can all do something. Today I used proceeds from this blog to purchase backpacks for refugee children. It’s not much, but it’s something.

“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father, inherit the kingdom prepared for you from the foundation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me food, I was thirsty and you gave me drink, I was a stranger and you welcomed me, I was naked and you clothed me, I was sick and you visited me, I was in prison and you came to me.’

Then the righteous will answer him, saying, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you drink? And when did we see you a stranger and welcome you, or naked and clothe you? And when did we see you sick or in prison and visit you?’ And the King will answer them, ‘Truly, I say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me.’

  1. Kate, oh my gosh talk about hot weather. It has been a hot mess here in Northern California for weeks and fires are everywhere. I am so so ready for cool weather and rain {Please}. Football seems to be the buzz all around, love to hear how many women are into football. I was in a MOPS group when our kids were pre-school age, I loved it.
The news recently is so sad and yes I have been watching about the refugee situation, it is so very sad and scary.
Enjoy your weekend and thank you for coffee today 🙂

    1. Yeah, I’m sure we have it easy compared to other places…I hope you stay safe from the wildfires. So frightening! I really enjoy MOPS! It’s great to connect with other moms on a deeper level than just “playground chat”.

  2. Thanks for joining us for coffee! I ran a 5K today that supported journalism (national press club) and I was thinking how important journalists have been in informing us about the refugee crisis – the picture of that boy seems to have unlocked the hearts of Europeans — hopefully we will offer aid as well.

  3. Layla is adorable! :]! And yay for animal sounds, hahaha. Those are the cutest! (I’m going to Columbus next weekend for the first time–super excited! :O )

Those photos are absolutely heartbreaking. :[ I really hope more help will be offered!

  4. Yes, I agree that the refugee crisis is pretty heartbreaking. It’s so hard sometimes to comprehend their suffering and I’m so blown away that God has placed me here. WE truly have so much to be grateful for.
