Hey there! I’m here today to share another great healthy living hack with you! This little tip is great for when you’re lacking motivation, specifically with healthy living stuff like working out or drinking water, but really it applies to anything.
Make It Fun AGAIN!
So simple, right!? There is a stereotype that healthy living has to be a drag… eating dry crusts of a million grain bread, doing fifty bizillion burpees, screaming trainers, kale for days. But healthy living CAN be and SHOULD BE fun!
Why Make Fitness Fun?
- If it’s fun you’ll actually do it! And you’ll actually keep doing it, which will help you not to burn out and quit.
- Life is too short and too precious not to enjoy it every minute of it. Seriously. Why would I want to do a workout I hate or eat food that I don’t enjoy? Yeah, that would be a no.
- If it’s fun your family and friends will get on board and want to join in! Having a supportive tribe will also help you make changes long term too. Win-win!
- Keep the long-term fun in mind. Having a long, healthy active life is fun! Being tied to insulin or losing your breath often is not fun at all.
How Can I Make Fitness Fun?
1. Try different workouts!
I really like hiking and running outdoors, strength training, and yoga. I do them because I enjoy it, genuinely.
Bootcamp style workouts aren’t really my thing. HIIT workouts, meh. Dance style exercise classses are completely frustrating to me, so they aren’t in my regular reportoire of workouts.
I also love mixing it up with anything outdoors, like biking, kayacking, playing tennis, ultimate frisbee, even playing on the playground occasionally! There are so many fun races now too…. like color runs, foam runs, mud runs, zombie runs!
2. Pair not-fun with fun.
I use this trick to help me fold my laundry too….I save my favorite podcasts for folding laundry, then I actually can enjoy it and the time goes faster. I
So if I have a HIIT workout on my agenda I do it running (an exercise I like) and to my favorite loud beats (I’m into early 2000s girl power if you must know.) And if I have to eat kale, I’m totally blending it up in a smoothie with orange and dark chocolate!
3. Do it with a friend!
Join a softball leauge, bowling league, swim team, or just get a workout buddy. I think that part of the popularity of Crossfit is the community and friendship it builds is just plain fun! Maybe make a grocery and meal planning date with a friend if planning healthy eats is difficult for you.
4. Reward yourself for getting the job done.
I like to win. Winning is fun. So no matter what I’m doing I’m always setting up a “win”. A daily “win” is drinking all my water. A weekly “win” is a weight loss or 5 pushups in a row, running farther and faster.
Set a goal and pick a prize to work toward…a pedicure, a new top, a self-date at Barnes and Noble, a new journal….then reward yourself when you reach your goal. I can push myself through a lot of burpees with the carrot of new clothes or fancy makeup dangling in front of me!
Making healthy living FUN is key to permanent lifestyle change! So this week my challenge to you is to keep it fun! Do something fun (and healthy)! Eat something fun (and healthy)! It is possible and is truly KEY to healthy living success long term!
