I have tried literally every face wash under the sun that promises to reduce oil/get rid of the acne that has plagued my life since I turned 12. People always told me I’d grow out of it. Yeah, I’m 30 now, and I’m not buying it. So recently I’ve been exploring some natural beauty options.
My skin is a especially irksome because it is 1. oily and 2. sensitive. So I have to be careful to use things that won’t overdry or irritate my skin, but also won’t leave me looking greasy aka “glowy” by 11 am.
But this year I decided to try some new beauty tools. It definitely couldn’t hurt since I still have some scarring from acne, plus some weird breakouts along my neckline (that I think are related to hormones-thanks pregnancy). So after some internet research the first thing I tried was using jojoba oil and the oil cleansing method to cleanse my skin.
Jojoba Oil for Cleansing
The oil cleansing method is basically using oil to clean oil on your face. It is counterintuitive and I’ve tried it before with coconut oil and- holy breakouts batman-things did not go well. I read that jojoba oil was the most similar to the oil your face naturally produces and works really well on oily skin. So I ordered some well-rated jojoba oil on Amazon (just $10!) and began my oil cleansing routine.
- Rinse your face with warm water.
- Apply a small amount (1-2 teaspoons) of jojoba oil on fingers and rub into skin.
- Cover face with hot, wet washcloth.
- Leave on face for 3-5 minutes (you’d think this would be relaxing, but I always get impatient.
- Use washcloth to remove oil from skin. No need to moisturize!
I normally do the oil cleansing routine 5 nights a week.
Melaleuca and Frankincense for healing
Often I add essential oils to my jojoba oil when I cleanse my face. I generally use Melrose oil (a Young Living blend of melaleuca oil and rosehip oil) because I have it on hand, but you could use any high quality melaleuca or tea tree oil. After cleansing I apply 1-2 drops of Frankincense oil to my acne trouble spots or scars.
Charcoal Mask and Bar for cleansing and purifying
A friend recently gave me samples of Beauty Counter’s Charcoal Cleansing Bar and Purifying Charcoal Mask to try. Let’s talk about the mask first. When you put it on you will FEEL it working–tightening your skin and sucking all the oil out! I loved how much smaller my pores looked and how clean my face felt after using. You can also use this to scare your small child if you’re a mean mom like that.
I have been using the charcoal bar in the mornings or when I’m not using the oil cleansing method above at night. It leaves my skin feeling fresh and clean and has no overpowering odor (it’s kind of nice since the essential oils I normally use are stronger-scented!). I love that Beauty Counter’s mission is to get safer products with less questionable chemicals into the hands of families. I have a growing list of their products that I’d like to try including foundation, eye cream, and sunscreen! You can check out more of their products here and if you’re interested in learning more about natural skin care with Beauty Counter you can join my friend Debi’s FB group The Beauty and The Mess!
Overall by using my jojoba oil, melrose, frankincense, charcoal mask, and charcoal bar I am finally seeing some improvements in healing from acne scars, less breakouts overall, and better skin appearance.
So many pictures of my face! Ha! This is definitely still a journey and I’d love to hear any of the natural skin or beauty products that YOU love!

For what it’s worth, people have also been telling me I’d get used to having acne. Guess what? I’m in my late 30’s and NO, I’m not getting used to it. Not by a long shot. Having acne makes me feel ugly and miserable. It’s good to have these tips to remind me that we can get rid of it and feel beautiful altogether.

Agree!! Definitely not giving up! I think a big part of mine is hormonal as mine was MUCH better (mostly clear most of the time) until I started having kids. During pregnancy and postpartum it is bad, but I feel like it is better this pregnancy than the last and I’m learning new ways to help so that is always good! If you want to check out the Beauty Counter products I am hosting a party this week and can get you a shopping link if you’d like! They have a deal where you can get the charcoal bar for FREE if you spend $125 in other products! 😀
