New Year Devotional for Moms: Holding Goals Loosely
If you’re a mom searching for a New Year devotional that speaks to both your love of planning and the reality that life rarely goes as expected, you’re in the right place. This devotional explores what it means to set goals with God while holding everything loosely in His grace. Let’s talk about planning for 2026 with intention—and with open hands.
Why New Year Goals Feel Different This Year
Here we are in the messy middle between Christmas and New Years. The days stretch out without much agenda. Maybe you travel to visit family (like we are doing!). Maybe you spend most of this week dreaming up activities and snacks for your hungry herd of children.
At the edges of these days, I hear the drumbeat of goals, intentions, words for the year, motivation, fresh inspiration, and big dreams. As a Type A, Enneagram 3, eldest daughter–this is my season to shine. I love a fresh start. I love big goals. I love planners and calendars. I love researching the perfect plan that will set me up for success in the new year.
And yet.
And yet, I know how life goes. Two years ago I found my 2024 rerouted with an unexpected pregnancy. Last year our entire year shifted when my husband was diagnosed with stage 4 cancer in March. Every goal I dreamed of became–”Survive this”. Survive it physically, emotionally, and spiritually. (And praise God we–strike that, HE did that!)
So I’ll never not set goals. But I also know that sometimes the year we set out with is not the year we end with. Life can change quickly and there is no shame in releasing or pausing goals when life throws us curveballs.
📌 PIN THIS:
Key Scripture: “See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland.” -Isaiah 43:19
Key Takeaway: God calls us to grow and move forward, but His love isn’t contingent on our productivity or achievement. Plan with intention, hold loosely with grace.
What Does the Bible Say About Goal Setting?
So what does Scripture actually say about this tension between planning and letting go? Between rest and work? Are the goal-setters and go-getters on a higher spiritual plane? I think it would be hard to make a case for that in Scripture. But I do think we see God’s desire for us to not stay stagnant through Scripture.
See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the wilderness and streams in the wasteland. -Isaiah 43:19 (NIV)
Where there is no vision from God, the people run wild, but those who adhere to God’s instruction know genuine happiness. -Proverbs 29:18 (VOICE)
Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already arrived at my goal, but I press on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of me. Brothers and sisters, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus. -Philippians 3:12-14 (NIV)
Following the Holy Spirit’s Leading in Your Plans
I think we also see the need to keep our hearts open to the fresh work the Holy Spirit is desiring to do in and through us.
And I will put my Spirit in you and move you to follow my decrees and be careful to keep my laws. -Ezekiel 36:27 (NIV)
When we set New Year goals as Christian moms, we’re not just making to-do lists—we’re inviting God to direct our steps and remaining sensitive to how He might redirect us along the way.
God’s Grace When Plans Change
I love that God is always calling us ‘further up and further in’ in our journey with Him. What’s even more beautiful? God’s grace and kindness are powerfully at work in our lives whether we reach our goals or not. We are beloved. Always.
But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior. -Titus 3:4-6 (NKJV)

So where does that leave a girl who loves to set big goals and sketch out plans to make them happen?
Hold Your Plans Loosely
Holding all things loosely while planning for 2026 kindly and intentionally.
I’m well past shaming or “shoulding” myself. But I also know the best version of myself loves something to strive for. I have goals for my body, soul, and spirit this year. Will I achieve them all? Probably not, but I’ll be further along my journey for the trying. And I’ll be better for holding Jesus’ hand in mine along the way.
Remember God’s Kindness Isn’t Based on Achievement
This week, as you dream and plan (or don’t!), remember: God’s love for you isn’t contingent on your productivity. His delight in you doesn’t hinge on your follow-through. Plan if it brings you life. Rest if that’s what you need. Either way, you’re held.
