Bible Verses for Pregnancy: Scriptures for Every Trimester
Pregnancy is a holy season. It’s also weird, messy, and exhausting. There is wonder as your body grows and changes as it grows your tiny human. It can be an anxious season, full of waiting and anticipation; it’s also a hopeful season where you dream about the future your little one will have. You’re growing a human being and your heart is full of a approximately 1399 feelings all at once.
This is one of the most faith-stretching seasons of a woman’s life.
God’s Word was made for seasons exactly like this one. These Bible verses for pregnancy aren’t just pretty words — they’re anchors you can hold onto. Pull one out when the fear creeps in at 2am. Write one on a sticky note for your bathroom mirror. Whisper one over your belly.
12 Uplifting Bible Verses for Pregnancy
Let these nine months, be a time you lean deeper into the arms of Your Father as you wait to become a mother.
First Trimester Bible Verses — Trust & Surrender
The first trimester can be full of nerves and excitement! Maybe you’re sharing with some people, maybe you’re not telling anyone yet. The exhaustion is overwhelming, the nausea can be awful, and (at least for me) you felt out of place in your body–not cute-pregnant, more looks like she ate too many tacos. 😂 These Scriptures of trust and surrender are perfect for the tender, early, waiting days.
Psalm 139:13-14 — For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.
God is already at work knitting your little one together piece-by-piece. Their whole life is already known by God according to verse sixteen, “You saw me before I was born. Every day of my life was recorded in your book. Every moment was laid out before a single day had passed.”
Jeremiah 29:11 — For I know the plans I have for you,” says the Lord. “They are plans for good and not for disaster, to give you a future and a hope.
God’s plans for your baby are already in motion and already GOOD. The Hebrew word translated “good” here is “shalom” meaning peace, welfare, wholeness, and freedom from calamity. That is God’s plan for you–not that everything will always go perfectly, but at the end of the day God is working every second of your life in a way that brings true peace and well-being to your soul.
Psalm 46:10 — He says, “Be still, and know that I am God; I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth.
Pregnancy is often a season of stillness, of reducing, while your body and the new life inside it is expanding. Sit with God in these quieter moments. Don’t be afraid to get the rest you need.
Proverbs 3:5-6 — Trust in the Lord with all your heart; do not depend on your own understanding. Seek his will in all you do, and he will show you which path to take.
This verse is perfect for the uncertainty of those early weeks, when fear can grip your heart. It’s also incredibly helpful for the overwhelm of decisions that come along with pregnancy, childbirth, and parenting. You have plenty of time to figure everything out AND the Holy Spirit will lead you step-by-step as you trust in Him.
Second Trimester Scriptures for Pregnancy — Peace & Identity
The second trimester often brings relief — more energy, a visible bump, cute maternity clothes, maybe finding out the gender of your baby, maybe picking out the name of your baby (one of my favorite things about having a baby!). But it also brings new questions about identity. Who are you becoming as a mother? Can you really do this? These verses speak to peace and purpose in your second trimester.
Psalm 23:1 — The Lord is my shepherd, I lack nothing.
Sister, I want you to know, you lack nothing in this season — even when it feels like you’re lacking sleep, energy, and answers. God says He is shepherding you with care and love, ensuring all your needs are met.
Psalm 37:4 — Take delight in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart.
Delight in this second trimester season! Enjoy your pregnancy glow and the joy of feeling your baby move. Enjoy shopping for tiny baby clothes and planning a nursery with your partner. Notice God with you in all of those moments and lay your desires for your pregnancy and your child’s life before the Lord.
Ephesians 3:20 — Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.
You can’t outdream God. Whatever desires and plans you have for this little one God is dreaming even bigger dreams for them than you are. (And He’s dreaming big for you as a mom too.)
Isaiah 26:3 — You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.
The what-ifs can creep in fast during this stage. But this verse is a promise — perfect peace is available to you, no matter what. Fix your mind on Him. Repeat truth to yourself. (A great resource for this at the end!) Place Scripture around you. Get help from your care team if needed. Lean on your support system.
Third Trimester Verses — Strength & Courage
The third trimester means you are in the home stretch–your little one will be here soon! You’re often more uncomfortable, anxious for your little one to get here, and maybe a little scared about what’s coming. The third trimester is where faith gets very real very fast. These verses are for the big, brave final weeks.
Joshua 1:9 — “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
God is with you wherever you go — including the delivery room, including the NICU. Your strength and courage can be fueled, not by perfect circumstances, but by His nearness to you.
Isaiah 43:1-2 — “Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have summoned you by name; you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.“
If you are walking through a high-risk pregnancy or heading into a birth that feels scary, this one is for you. God doesn’t just know your name — He claims you. The waters may feel overwhelming right now, but His promise is that they will not sweep you away. You are held, you are known, and you are His.
2 Timothy 4:17 — “But the Lord stood by me and gave me strength.”
This was the Bible verse I claimed in my third trimester with my second son, Barrett. You can read the whole story here, but I’m so grateful for this truth that gave me strength in a very challenging end of pregnancy and delivery.
Psalm 94:18-19 — “When I said, “My foot is slipping,” your unfailing love, Lord, supported me. When anxiety was great within me, your consolation brought me joy”
This is the verse I found great comfort in when I was facing a lot of hardships during the end of my third pregnancy. You can read that story here. When things feel out of control and like we are going to fall, God is our support, the unseen hand that steadies us.
A Note on Fear & Faith in Pregnancy
I wish I could tell you that there is nothing to worry about during pregnancy. But we know that’s not true. From the beginning of time women have put their life on the line to create new life.
An estimated 15-20% of known pregnancy end in miscarriage according to the NIH. This is a heartbreaking risk, along with complications, birth defects, and health consequences long after birth for mothers. Not every pregnancy story is pretty. Many hold heartbreak and heaviness–and yet pregnancy is an act of defiant hope.
God is present and faithful in ALL of it. The joy and the grief. The answered prayers and the ones that seemingly go unheard. You can bring all of your tender feelings, questions, and fears to God. He will hold you through it all.
