21 Back to School Prayers for Elementary, Middle & High School Moms
As we come up on the month of August, back to school looms in the future. Even as we wind down lake days and late nights, we know the school year approaches with it’s unrelenting schedule of learning, clubs, sports and activities. If you’re like me that both excites and exhausts you. Maybe it makes you a little sad–you want to soak in the freedom a little longer. Maybe it scares you a little–the school year is full of challenges and uncertainties.
You (and your child) don’t need a fancy new calendar or a whole new you or an endless summer. You need prayer for the season ahead.
Which is why I’m sharing 21 Back to School Prayers today that cover every stage, every kid, every kind of first day from kindergarten to college.
This post is organized by age and stage so moms can jump to what they need. I even included a set of prayers for specific first-timers–like a first-time homeschooling mom or a mom transitioning her kids out of homeschooling or a mama with a first-time empty nest.
I hope you borrow these prayers and are blessed by praying them faithfully for your children.
Prayers for the Elementary School Mom
A prayer for courage to walk into a new classroom
Father, give my child patient courage today as they walk into a new classroom filled with new faces. Help them to remember that they can do hard things and that You are always with them. Give them courage to keep trying when they fail. Amen
A prayer for kindness
God, Fill my child with kindness today. May they be the one who sits with the loner, who plays with the one left out. Give them a heart that stands up for the one others are pushing down. Bring them friends and classmates who are kind too. May their classroom be a place of kindness where all treated with respect and grace. Amen.
A prayer for a heart that loves learning
God I pray for ___________ (insert your child’s name)–may they grow in their love for learning. Let their curiosity be undaunted. Let their minds light up as they discover the world around them. Help them fall in love with the process, not just “getting through the work”. Give them experiences today that empower their creativity and embolden them to keep learning, even when it doesn’t come easily. Amen.
A prayer for safety throughout the school day
Father, keep the children within the walls of ____________________ (your child’s school) safe. Protect them physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually. May no darkness or violence enter this place in the mighty name of Jesus. Amen.
A prayer for respect toward teachers and authority
Jesus, help my child to be respectful today. May they treat their teachers and leaders as they would want to be treated. Give them ears to listen well. Grow them in their responsiveness, helpfulness, and attention. Bless them for how they respond to authority, knowing You alone are the true and just Ruler of our lives. Amen.
Prayers for the Middle School Mom
A prayer for identity rooted in Christ, not in others’ opinions
Father, middle school is such a tender, awkward age. I pray for my child–that they would root their identity in Christ, not in what others say about them. May they hold firmly to their status as “Beloved Child of God”, “Image-Bearer”, and “Valued and Precious”. Hold back the tongues of those who would seek to tear them down, instead surround them with uplift and encouraging words today. Amen.
A prayer for good friendships
God of heaven, give _________________ (child’s name) a good friend. Someone who is kind, generous, and knows and loves You. Give my child discernment to not get wooed by fake friendships or peer pressure or chasing popularity. I pray you would continue to bring high quality friends into their life that help them grow, that they feel safe to be themselves with. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
A prayer for unwavering confidence
Lord, I pray unwavering confidence over my child today. May they keep their head up when life is hard and disappointments come. Keep them hopeful and positive no matter what grade they get or who they sit with at lunch. May they be rooted in You, unperturbed by the chaos around them because they know what really matters in life. Amen.
A prayer for wisdom with tech
God, my child needs wisdom to deal with things I never had to. Will you help them to know when to turn off the screens, to put down the phones, and to engage in the real world. Protect them from online bullies, malicious predators, and misleading AIs. Give them a passion for in-person interaction and activities. Give me courage and grace to guide them into what is healthiest for their body, mind, and soul. Help me to model good screen habits and the joy of living off-line. Amen.

A prayer for a soft heart
Father, give ____________________ (your child’s name) a soft heart. May they peel back the layers and bring their true, whole self to me as a parent. Father, give them courage to ask me the hard questions. Give me patience and the wisdom to recognize when they’re open and needing care and connection. Bring peace to conflict–don’t let us harden our hearts to one another. Let our home be a place where we can all let down our guards and simply be. Amen.
Prayers for the High School & College Mom
A prayer for clarity on calling and purpose
Lord, bring clarity to ________________ (child’s name) calling and purpose. Speak to them by the Spirit. May they see the unique way their “deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet”*. Give them vision and joy as they look forward to their future. May they walk each step with You. Amen.
A prayer for wisdom in relationships
Jesus, You see my child. You know them fully and you know each of their friends, romantic interests, and casual acquaintances. Give them wisdom as they navigate these relationships. Show them where to invest their time and emotional energy. Help them to set healthy boundaries–physically, emotionally, and spiritually. May their relationships bring You glory and draw them closer to You. Amen.
A prayer to be a light in a dark world
Father, may my child be a light for you today. Give them opportunities to share Jesus by their words and actions with anyone who will listen. I speak courage and boldness over their life to stand for the upside-down kingdom of God. Amen.
A prayer for good decision-making
God, it’s incredible to see how _________________ (child’s name) has spread their wings and grown. I pray for the decisions they make today–that they would honor Christ in all things, that they would respect their fellow image-bearers, that they would be made in authenticity and love. Give wisdom and discernment as they step into independence. Amen.
A prayer for transition seasons
Lord, transitions can be shaky times. So much is changing in this season, but You are a sure foundation for my child. Protect them. Bring them into positive relationships with other Jesus-followers. May this time of transition be a time of growth into ownership of their faith and deeper trust in You. Amen.
First Day of School Prayers and Special Situations
For the mom sending her baby to kindergarten for the first time
God you know my mama heart is aching with joy and sadness. Today–their first day at school–is the epitome of bittersweet. Thank you for the gift of this child. Thank you that I’m their mom. Protect them and guide them today. Be close to them when they are nervous or afraid; celebrate with them when they make a friend or learn something new. Be near, Lord Jesus, as I let them go. Amen.

For the mom homeschooling for the first time
God, this thing I’m endeavoring to do feels too big for me. I’m thrilled for this new adventure–and I’m terrified I’ll mess it all up. Give me peace. Fill in every gap I will leave. Give me grace for them and give them grace for me. Most of all, meet us here Jesus, in this homeschooling. Be with us as we learn together. Amen.
For the homeschool mom sending her kids to school for the first time
God, everything is changing and I know it’s good, but that doesn’t mean it isn’t hard. Bring them friends–good, true besties to stand by them. Give them kind teachers–ones who will go the extra mile to include them and make sure they don’t feel silly for not knowing how everything goes. Give them courage and joy in this new way of learning. In the name of Jesus, Amen.
For the mom whose child has special needs or an IEP prayer
God, I have advocated, prepared them, and did everything I can humanly think of for this school year to go well. And yet. I lay all of these plans and preparations at Your feet. You love my child more than I do, You know them better, You advocate better. Go before them. Bring friends that will love them, teachers that will encourage and develop them, a team of supports to hold them up when they need it. Help me to trust and rest–even if just for a few hours. Amen.
For the mom sending her baby to college for the first time

Lord, I know you love my child and want what’s best for them. Help me to trust You. Give me joy and peace as they learn, knowing they’ll be back in my arms soon. Give me patient endurance for the marathon that is parenting. I surrender this school year to You, Jesus. Amen.
