The Power of Qava: Active Trust and Strength
In Isaiah 40:31, the word used for “wait” is the Hebrew word Qava.
“But they who wait for the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles; they shall run and not be weary; they shall walk and not faint.”
Qava means to wait, hold fast, trust, or hope. Rooted in an ancient biblical metaphor, it conveys the image of twisting separate strands together to bind a strong rope.
Often in our faith, waiting feels weak or passive. But Qava reminds us that waiting on the Lord is an active process of binding our weak lives tightly to His infinite strength. You aren’t just passing time; you are tying your heart fast to God’s promises. That takes true courage.
The Depth of Hul: Waiting Through Anguish
In contrast, Psalm 37:7 uses a different Hebrew word for waiting: Hul.
“Be still before the Lord and wait patiently for him; do not fret when people succeed in their ways, when they carry out their wicked schemes.”
Hul describes an anguished, anticipatory waiting—a season loaded with tension and longing. Remaining silent and still feels painful when we wait for God to bring clarity or justice while others seem to move ahead effortlessly. Scripture acknowledges that waiting can be emotionally heavy. God doesn’t expect us to pretend it’s easy; He simply invites His children to stay rooted in Him while we wait.
Scriptures for When You Are Tired of Waiting
When uncertainty stretches on, it’s easy for anxiety to creep in. These verses remind us that God remains our anchor even when our hearts grow weary.
Psalm 27:14
“Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord.”
Waiting takes strength of heart. It is uncomfortable, can induce anxiety, and makes us question whether we are in the right place at the right time. If you are in a hard season, rely on God to provide the courage you need. He doesn’t leave you alone in the middle of the wait—He promises to never leave or forsake you.
Lamentations 3:25-26
“The Lord is good to those who wait for him, to the soul who seeks him. It is good that one should wait quietly for the salvation of the Lord.”
Whether we are stuck in traffic, standing in a long checkout line, or waiting for a major life breakdown to heal, waiting is draining. Yet Jeremiah offers a comforting truth: right here, in the middle of the delay, God is good to you. His goodness doesn’t hinge on timing or circumstances; He is good even while we wait.
Psalm 62:5
“Yes, my soul, find rest in God; my hope comes from him.”
True rest comes when we stop trying to control outcomes. We can quiet our souls and settle down because our ultimate hope isn’t tied to a specific timeline—it’s tied directly to God.
Psalm 40:1
“I waited patiently for the Lord; he turned to me and heard my cry.”
God will not abandon you to the pit. When considering this verse, the story of Daniel in the lions’ den comes to mind. Daniel likely wished God would teleport him straight out of danger. Instead, God closed the lions’ mouths while Daniel stayed in the den. Rescue wasn’t instantaneous, but God delivered him in His perfect timing.

James 5:7
“Be patient, then, brothers and sisters, until the Lord’s coming. See how the farmer waits for the land to yield its valuable crop, patiently waiting for the autumn and spring rains.”

Isaiah 30:18
