I used to be very “meh” about Halloween. But now that I’m a mom I absolutely LOVE it–I get to play dress up with my real live baby dolls! I started researching our family’s Halloween costumes in August. I’m not even kidding. It is exciting to get everyone dressed up and celebrate the FUN (nothing creepy or scary here!) of the fall season!
With that being said it kind of kills me to spend a lot of money on a Halloween costume that will only be worn once and never used again. For older kids, like Layla, who are into playing dress up that is okay, but I’m not going to shell out $30+ dollars on a costume for my baby. Just not happening. But there are so many cute and creative ideas you can dress your little one in for Halloween! So I challenged myself to come up with 7 cute and comfy Halloween outfits your baby can wear again. The great thing about these outfits is you can build them with things you already have in your baby’s wardrobe or buy new things that they can wear often, add a few accessories and you have an awesome Halloween outfit!
(Because I have both a boy and a girl I tried to pick outfits that could go either way or that you could reimagine for the other gender.)
7 Cute and Comfy Baby Halloween Costumes
1.A Princess
A princess is a classic Halloween outfit, but it so easy and truly there is nothing more adorable than seeing your little baby girl surrounded by tulle in all her regality. We are all about the poofy, fun dresses so we had a lot to choose from, anything pink and frilly will make a perfect princess garb. Add in a royal scepter and a crown and your little princess is good to go! This outfit could also be easily accessorized into a fairy or a ballerina too.
2. A Scarecrow
This is actually Barrett’s Halloween costume this year! Ack! It’s so cute and so easy to put together. Overalls + Plaid + Cute Hat +two sheets of felt cut into “straw” (because really straw is itchy) and patches = the cutest scarecrow! Use face paint to add a nose! You can apply the straw and patches using safety pins or a tiny bit of fabric glue (just depends on how attached you are to your items!
3. A Cat
This classic costume could be the easiest ever. Gather up a black top and black bottoms. Cut long piece of black felt with a rounded tip to be the tail. Two black triangles attached with hot glue to headband create the ears. Add whiskers and a pink nose with face paint.
4. A Hipster
Hipster babies are truly the cutest. Have a little fun with this trendy baby outfit! Find a plaid shirt, a statement tee, skinny jeans, and a knit cap. Accessorize with a coffee cup and protest sign. 😉 Also, a truly hilarious counterpoint to this outfit would be to do a “basic girl”–leggings, tunic sweater, blanket scarf, boots! Super-cute and so wearable!
5. An Old Man (or Woman)
This is another fun one that can be worn again. Dress shirt, khaki pants, bow tie, cardigan, and newsies hat–old man! Add a cane or a newspaper or a single balloon for a play on the movie UP. For an old lady layer a dress, tights, a cardigan and pearls (always under supervision). Precious!
6. Baby Bear
I’m pretty partial to this idea because Barrett is our little boobear, but if you already have or are in the market for winter outwear for your baby a pram or bunting (I seriously had to look up the name) finding one that is bearlike is a cute, cozy, and simple Halloween outfit. You can add small honey pot, a don’t feed the bear sign, or just let your little one’s cuteness shine!
7. 80s Aerobic Instructor
I may have accidentally dressed my daughter in 80s fashion a lot! Button a bodysuit over bright pants, then add some fun leg-warmers and a bold headband and you have a “totally awesome” Halloween costume! Separately these pieces can all work into lots of different outfits and are great basic wardrobe pieces. For a boy you could go with a “80s rocker” look – ripped jeans, cut off sleeves, boots, bandana around forehead and sunglasses. You could also use face paint to draw on a tattoo, I <3 mom, of course!
By using your imagination and creativity you can find adorable Halloween outfits for your baby that can be worn over and over again! I loved shopping for some of these outfits at my local Babies “R” Us! They have so many cute clothes, especially for little boys! I spent a long time just wandering around getting ideas not only for Halloween outfits, but upcoming Christmas wear! While I was there I also stocked up on some of my favorite wipes, Huggies Natural Care Wipes, available at stores nationwide (look in the diaper and wipe aisle). I love that Babies “R” Us has every baby product imaginable–I also picked up some bottles, nipples, and some baby food while we were there. I love a one-stop-shop!
On October 15th Babies “R” Us is hosting a Baby’s First Halloween celebration from 11am-12pm that includes a keepsake craft and a parade around the store. You can meet and mingle with other moms, get helpful solutions and tips for cold weather, and win giveaways and raffle prizes! Sounds like such a fun event and great resource for parents!
