Valentine’s Day is a day for love. Although it is typically a holiday for romantic love, all kinds of love can be celebrated: God’s love for us, family love, and the love between dear friends!
What are the origins of Valentine’s Day?
Valentine’s Day actually began as a Christian holiday to celebrate the life and self-sacrificial love of Saint Valentine. He was traditionally understood to be a priest who in 240-270 AD began to conduct illegal marriages between Christian couples. Roman Emperor Claudius had outlawed marriage for young people believing it was a distraction from service to their country. On February 14th Saint Valentine was killed for his decision to go against the emperor’s decree and join people in holy matrimony.
Saint Valentine demonstrated sacrificial brotherly love and conviction in his beliefs which is definitely worth celebrating!
Valentine’s Day became a holiday known for exchanging Valentine’s Day cards and small gifts in the Victorian era and has grown into the larger holiday we know today.
