35 Most Beautiful Bible Verses for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is a day for love. Although it is typically a holiday for romantic love, all kinds of love can be celebrated: God’s love for us, family love, and the love between dear friends!

What are the origins of Valentine’s Day?

Valentine’s Day actually began as a Christian holiday to celebrate the life and self-sacrificial love of Saint Valentine. He was traditionally understood to be a priest who in 240-270 AD began to conduct illegal marriages between Christian couples. Roman Emperor Claudius had outlawed marriage for young people believing it was a distraction from service to their country. On February 14th Saint Valentine was killed for his decision to go against the emperor’s decree and join people in holy matrimony.

Saint Valentine demonstrated sacrificial brotherly love and conviction in his beliefs which is definitely worth celebrating!

Valentine’s Day became a holiday known for exchanging Valentine’s Day cards and small gifts in the Victorian era and has grown into the larger holiday we know today.

The Bible has a lot to say about romantic love and love in marriage. Much of the Bibles romantic Bible verses were written by King Solomon, the son of David. He is renowned for having 1,000 wives and concubines and writing the Old Testament books Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Solomon.

Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs.  Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth.  It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. -1 Corinthians 13:4-7

A selection from 1 Corinthians 13, the love chapter (which applies to all types of love) but is often used in weddings. In my own wedding we had a reading from this passage in the NKJV alternating with The Message.
